Licensed From The Vatican Museums, “Michelangelo – A Different View” Brings The Beautiful Frescos Of The Sistine Chapel To The U.S.

Sanctioned by The Vatican, “Michelangelo – A Different View” gives visitors an unprecedented perspective of the famous frescos by Florentine master sculptor/painter, Michelangelo, adorning the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Running in Albany, NY Thursday, July 29 to Monday, August 23 at the Albany Capital Center, this exhibition will be making future stops in Baton Rouge, LA, McAllen, TX and Columbus, OH with additional cities in the works throughout 2021 and into 2022.

“What makes this exhibit so unique is that all the images that you will see here of the frescos from the Sistine Chapel were produced with a license from the Vatican Museums and taken after the restoration that took place in the 80’s and early 90’s. As a result, the amount of detail, the depth of the colors and the clarity of the images are second to none,” says Glenn Blackman of Global Touring and Promotion, Inc.

“My sincerest thanks go to those who are responsible for the idea and realization of this different view of Michelangelo’s frescoes. Those who see Michelangelo’s images will agree with Pope Francis when he says: ‘The world is more than a problem to be resolved – it is a joyous secret that we regard with heartwarming praise.’ As a representative of the Bishop of Rome, who has been chosen for centuries beneath these frescoes, I wish this exhibition every success,” says Papal Envoy, Archbishop Dr. Nikola Eterovic.

In 1508, a 33-year-old Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II and spent four years of his life on his back on scaffolding under the vaulted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painting his interpretation of the history of creation, Genesis. “Michelangelo – A Different View” offers an opportunity to look upon these masterpieces from a perspective which up to this point had only been accorded to Michelangelo himself, and the people who did the restoration, as the originals grace the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the height of nearly 70 feet.

Far away from the 5.5 million visitors that visit the Sistine Chapel annually, patrons here can take in the imposing paintings at their leisure and truly soak them in from only a few feet away. Under the license of the Vatican Museums, the images were reproduced and transferred to special fabric with a technique that allows for a true-to-life reproduction that is capable of displaying the broad spectrum of colors while maintaining excellent color depth and consistency.

Previously exhibited across Europe, this experience has received rave reviews:

“I wish, the exhibition could stay in my castle forever.” – Princess Gloria Von Thurn and Taxis

“Like a picture book of a giant” – Focus.De

“Stunning and timeless.” – Rhein-Zeitung

“The Sistine Chapel turned on its head.” – Kolner Express

“So near to heaven.” – Kolner Stadt Anzeiger

“Best edutainment.” – Kunst-Mag.De

This is the only exhibition showcasing the entire set of works, over 50 pieces, including the most famous painting of them all — The Last Judgement, which covers the entire altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, and The Creation of Adam, a depiction of God giving life to the first man. It allows visitors to view the superb reproductions of the elaborate paintings from a short distance with no time constraints, meaning they will be able to fully appreciate their beauty and fine detail.

Following the restoration of the Sistine Chapel (1982 – 1994), a Japanese team received permission to film the newly resplendent Chapel. Photo slides were made of the frescoes in a 200 x 250 mm format, which since have been guarded by the Vatican Museums. These elaborate reproductions of the paintings in the exhibition allow visitors an intimate experience and aims to provide observers with a view of Michelangelo’s technique which is still setting standards today. The experience also develops a very personal perspective of the depictions and intentions of the artist.

By separating the paintings into a series of panels, the exhibition allows art lovers to study closely individual elements of the overall artwork and specific aspects of Michelangelo’s artistry. In 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned sculptor and painter Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni – known simply as Michelangelo – to paint the huge ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo and his assistants spent four years creating his astounding Renaissance masterpiece. Faced by the challenge presented by the chapel’s architecture, he developed unique painting techniques, setting new standards for future generations of artists. Michelangelo was originally commissioned only to paint the 12 apostles but persuaded the Pope to let him depict scenes and individuals of his own choosing. Consequently, the chapel is donned with more than 300 characters from the Bible. The work was completed in 1512 and has been revered by artists across the world for more than 500 years as well as being admired by millions of visitors each year.

The so-called Quattrocento frescoes have adorned the walls of the Sistine Chapel since the 15th century. As an addition to – and to complete – the exhibition “Michelangelo – A Different View“, these impressive frescoes await visitors in the entrance. The scenes from the life of Jesus and that of Moses painted by Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli provide additional historical background and allow for a deeper insight into this epoch. Michelangelo encountered these works before starting work on the vaulted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
