Multi-GRAMMY-winning folk pioneers, The Kingston Trio, join PLA Media

Folk icons, The Kingston Trio, have aligned with PLA Media for representation. This pioneering group occupies a unique, preeminent position in American musical history.

They were the first to receive a Grammy in the Country & Western Performance category, and are among the music elite as recipients of the Grammy Lifetime Acheivement Award for bringing acoustic folk into the mainstream. They are also credited with having sparked the American Folk Revival, which gave rise to artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Leonard Cohen, just to name a few. The group is cited as an influence by recording artists as musically and generationally diverse as Dylan, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and The Eagles, as well as comedian and banjo player Steve Martin, and contemporary artists such as the multi-Grammy-nominated Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers.

The Kingston Trio were ushered into PLA by Shelly Mullins, Senior Vice President of Marketing, who handled the legendary trio’s tour press for nearly a year before joining the agency. She also handled all their advertising planning and buying for their highly-anticipated return to The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles with “A Celebration of Folk Music” concert and national pay-per-view held earlier this year.

“Working with Shelly Mullins is always a very professional, enjoyable experience,” stated Bobbie Childress, Manager of The Kingston Trio and widow of founding member Bob Shane. “Shelly has helped us sell out venues, even with very little lead time. Her expertise is inspiring and she has made a positive impact on ticket sales for shows with the Kingston Trio.”

The Kingston Trio is one of the longest-operating bands touring today. Formed in 1956 by Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard (replaced by John Stewart at the height of the group’s popularity in 1961), the group has undergone multiple personnel changes throughout the years. While its founding members have since passed away, the music of The Kingston Trio lives on with the passing of the torch to three new members with intrinsic ties to the original: Mike Marvin (longtime friend of founding member Reynolds’ son), Tim Gorelangton (friend of Reynolds since boyhood and one of the few to record with him), and Buddy Woodward (who, on occasion, filled in on tour with the Trio).
