West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center Celebrates Tennessee Culture with a Lineup of Must-Attend Events

West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center (WTDHC) is excited to announce a series of upcoming events designed to showcase the rich culture, history, and musical traditions of the region. From heartfelt blues jams to family-friendly festivals, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the heart of West Tennessee this season. All events are FREE and family friendly.

Among the highlights is the highly anticipated Sleepy John’s Country Blues Birthday Jam, an annual celebration of one of the most beloved figures in the local blues scene. This year’s event promises to deliver an unforgettable evening of live music, community camaraderie, and the chance to honor Sleepy John’s legacy. The event will feature talented local musicians playing soulful country blues, alongside food, drinks, and a festive atmosphere.

Celebrating the birthdays of Brownsville Bluesman Sleepy John Estes (1/25) with birthday cake and more.

Ever wanted to write a Blues song? West TN Bluesman Elam McKnight will walk you through the structure of a Blues tune and share tips for creating your unique compositions at 10 am. Following the songwriting workshop, you can enjoy birthday cake and participate in an acoustic Blues jam session. Bring your instruments, your voice or just your love for the Blues.

Tennessee Songwriter’s Week Qualifying Round
Date: February 1, 2025

Tennessee Songwriters Week is recognized the last week of February and designated by state legislature. The goal is to support music venues and songwriters with live performances across the state as well as to inspire Tennesseans and tourists to experience the state’s artists and music heritage.

The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center will host a qualifying round Saturday, February 1. Two winners will be selected to advance to semi-finals at Lafayette’s Music Room February 25, with hopes of winning a chance to perform at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville in March.

Hatchie Birdfest

Unique outdoor adventures and over 200 species of birds await you on the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge. The event will includes in-person nature walks and hikes, educational seminars, and more. Perfect for seasoned birders or beginners.

Exit 56 Blues Fest
Date: May 24, 2025 – May 25, 2025

Exit 56 Blues Fest celebrates the legacy of Brownsville bluesmen Sleepy John Estes, Hammie Nixon and Yank Rachell. The music festival takes place on the grounds of the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville, TN each Memorial Day weekend.

These events not only offer incredible entertainment but also provide an opportunity to connect with local heritage and experience firsthand the deep cultural roots that make West Tennessee so special. Whether you’re a blues enthusiast, history buff, or simply looking for a fun night out, the events at West Tennessee Heritage promise something for every taste.
